چکیده
A 65-year-old Greek man with a history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension was admitted because of right upper quadrant pain, nausea and palpable right quadrant mass. On admission the patient was febrile (38.8 degrees C) with a total bilirubin level of 1.99 mg/dl (direct 0.59 mg/dl); SGOT 1.26 mg/dl; Na 135 mmol/l and K 2.9 mmol/l. The white blood count was 15200/mul with 92.2% neutrophiles. Axial sections of single slice CT imaging (section thickness 10 mm), revealed emphysematous cholecystitis with thickening of gallbladder wall and wall enhancement after iv contrast enhancement, as well as, dilatation of the gallbladder with multiple gallstones precipitate and intraluminal air. The patient underwent subtotal cholecystectomy and a cholecystostomy was placed. The culture of the bile showed positivity to toxin A of Clostridium Difficile and to Escherichia Coli. The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful.

Peritonitis and pneumoperitoneum due to emphysematous cholecystitis: a case report
Background: Emphysematous cholecystitis is a rare variant of acute cholecystitis with high mortality and morbidity rate. Emphysematous cholecystitis most often occurs in older men and Emphysematous cholecystitis often occurs in patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes and vascular disease. The combination of emphysematous cholecystitis and pneumoperitoneum is even rarer. In this study, w...

are gas-forming infections within the parenchyma of solid organs or the walls of the hollow viscera. Some well known emphysematous infections include emphysematous cholecystitis, emphysematous gastritis, emphysematous pancreatitis, emphysematous pyelonephritis, and emphysematous cystitis (1). An emphysematous infection in more than one organ is very rare (2) and, to the best of our knowledge, n...
متن کاملMassive pneumoretroperitoneum arising from emphysematous cholecystitis: a case report and the literature review
BACKGROUND Emphysematous cholecystitis is a severe variant of acute cholecystitis caused by anaerobic bacteria. Although intraperitoneal air as a complication has been described in association with emphysematous cholecystitis, pneumoretroperitoneum arising from emphysematous cholecystitis is extremely rare. Herein, we describe a rare case of pneumoretroperitoneum arising from emphysematous chol...
متن کاملPneumomediastinum as a complication of emphysematous cholecystitis: Case report
BACKGROUND Emphysematous cholecystitis is a variant of acute cholecystitis which is generally caused by gas-forming organisms. Emphysematous cholecystitis may cause gas spreading within the subcutaneous tissue, peritoneal cavity and retroperitoneum. CASE PRESENTATION We present a case of emphysematous cholecystitis in a middle-aged diabetic patient who, postoperatively, presented edema in bot...
متن کاملEmphysematous cholecystitis associated with constipation: A case report
Constipation is one of the most common complaints in the general population, with a wide variety of causes. We present the case of a man with a four-week history of constipation who developed signs and symptoms of acute cholecystitis. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed emphysematous cholecystitis and pericholecystic inflammatory changes extending to the adjacent colon. Emergent ch...
متن کاملA Case of Emphysematous Cholecystitis Managed by Laparoscopic Surgery
BACKGROUND Emphysematous cholecystitis is a rare condition caused by ischemia of the gallbladder wall with secondary gas-producing bacterial proliferation. The pathophysiology and epidemiology of this condition differ from that in gallstone-related acute cholecystitis. This report illustrates a case of emphysematous cholecystitis successfully treated by laparoscopic surgery. METHODS An 83-yea...
